Course Description

Dance at Year 10 builds on the skills and techniques introduced in Year 9 around performance and choreography. You do not need to have studied Dance in Year 9 to take Dance in Year 10. Students will develop ideas to create dance works and learn a variety of new styles and techniques.
Topics included in Dance:
- Different dance genres
- Elements of dance
- Choreography
- Performance techniques
Students who have a passion for dance, are interested in being imaginative and creative and enjoy learning practical skills, should take this course. The course develops self-management and interpersonal skills, builds self-confidence, and encourages creativity. This course also develops strong collaboration skills. Year 10 Dance leads on to NCEA Dance across Levels 1, 2, and 3 (Which is a University Entrance, UE, approved course).
Course Overview
Term 1
Performance of a specific dance genre and self-choreography of a lyrical dance.
Term 2
Performance of Jazz and Hip Hop.
Term 3
Annual showcase. Students then choreograph in groups dances which deliver messages about our environmental issues.
Term 4
Students research, develop and present workshops on various ethnic and cultural dances from around the world.
Contributions and Equipment/Stationery
There is an approximate cost of up to $20 for guest tutors. Students are expected to provide their own device/stationery. Students are expected to be in PE uniform OR the Dance uniform. Black tights, shorts, pants of the students choice are to go with either the Dance Uniform top or PE top.
