Course Description

NCEA Level 1

The aims of this course are for students to develop communication skills, self-confidence, creativity and team-building through a wide range of performance forms and styles. The students will be involved in creating improvised, devised and scripted drama for performance to a range of different audiences.

 The students will study the beginning of modern theater with a focus on Greek Tragedy. They will take part in the live performance of a comedy play, where parents and friends are able to support them as members of the audience.Students will also work in groups to devise a drama based on New Zealand history, this will involve the exploration of theatre technologies.

The students will develop an awareness of themselves as well as how they fit into New Zealand and the global community.



Course Overview

Term 1
Students will study Greek Theatre, with a focus on Oedipus Rex by Sophocles. They will apply feature of the theatre form for a performance in groups. This is a individual grade.

Term 2
Students will prepare and perform a comedy for a public audience. This is an individual grade.

Term 3
Students will work in groups to devise a performance based on a historical event. Students will be introduced to the technologies of theatre including lighting, sound and costume. This is a group grade.

Term 4
Students will prepare for the external examination. This will involve revisiting Greek Theatre.

Contributions and Equipment/Stationery

$15 for live theatre viewing required for the external examination

Recommended Prior Learning

Having completed Y10 Drama would be an advantage.
