NCEA Level 1 Mathematics

Course Description

Mathematics is compulsory in Year 11 and you will be placed into one of the following options dependent on achievement:

11MAG - Mathematics Numeracy

Designed for students who have difficulty with Mathematics, 11MAG is focussed on attaining Numeracy through internally assessed Achievement Standards. 

The entire course is internally assessed.

11MAH - Mathematics General

Students study Mathematics in the New Zealand Curriculum. This course is a continuation of the study of mathematical processes, number, measurement, geometry, algebra and statistics.

Assessment is predominantly internal, with only one standard assessed in the November NCEA examination.

Students who wish to study Level 2 Mathematics in Year 12 will need to pass the externally assessed standard as well as enter and pass the Algebra Common Assessment Task. Entries for this Algebra task will be taken early in term three and the assessment will be sat in the third week in September.

11MAT - Mathematics

Students study Mathematics in the New Zealand curriculum. This course is a continuation of the study of mathematical processes, number, measurement, geometry, algebra and statistics. 11MAT is a full Year 11 Mathematics course which enables students to proceed to Year 12 Mathematics. It allows students to achieve both the 10 credits required for Level 1 Numeracy and University Entrance numeracy.

11MAX - Mathematics Extension

Students in this course cover all of the material covered in the 11MAT course. During the year students will complete one NCEA internal assessment. They also sit the same four externally assessed standards as the 11MAT course. In addition, students in this course study the Cambridge International IGCSE curriculum and sit the IGCSE (extended curriculum) examination.



Recommended Prior Learning

Successful completion of Year 10 Mathematics.There are four Year 11 Mathematics courses. Students are placed in the appropriate course based on their results and the standard of their work in the previous year.

Pathway

Students will be placed in classes on the basis of their results in Level 1 Mathematics
