Course Description

This course develops communication skills in Chinese Mandarin through reading, writing, listening and speaking. Cultural knowledge in terms of how to communicate appropriately in Chinese society is also an important aspect of the course. By the end of the course students will be able to communicate information, ideas and opinions on a range of topics or personal relevance in Chinese Mandarin . Students will also master approximately 370 Chinese characters.
Course Overview
Term 1
Describing People and things in Chinese. Learn to talk about your family and friends, describe their physical appearance, interests and abilities. Learn to make comparisons in Chinese.
Term 2
Talking about your town in Chinese. Learn to talk about what facilities your town has to offer, and give street directions. Learn to make telephone calls and talk about various occupations.
Term 3
Using money in China. Learn how to go shopping in China in the context of the supermarket, clothes store, department store and shopping online.
Term 4
Making travel plans in Chinese. Learn to talk about sightseeing in Beijing, Shopping in Shanghai, and traveling throughout New Zealand. Learn how to write a letter or e-mail appropriately in Chinese.
Recommended Prior Learning
Year 10 Mandarin Chinese, or HOD approval
Contributions and Equipment/Stationery
There is a course contribution of $7 to cover learning resources.
Students are expected to supply their own stationary.
Credit Information
You will be assessed in this course through all or a selection of the standards listed below.
