NCEA Level 2 Visual Arts Design

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Ms J. Braithwaite

The course prepares students for the first stages of a career in Graphic Design or any other of the many related design or architectural careers. Students are taught the basic principles of Design and the ways that designers work. In particular, they will learn about the design process and how to apply this process to a range of design tasks, including graphic design, package design, typographic layout and the use of computers as a design tool. The aim of this course is to provide students with a thorough grounding in Design, which involves understanding a design brief, how to carry out research, generating ideas and developing these ideas in a systematic way through to the finished artwork. Drawing plays a major part in this course as the central means of generating ideas. Drawing is carried out by hand in conventional ways and also by using a computer. Students are prepared for studying NCEA Level 3 Design in Year 13 and they are given guidance as to how they might pursue a career in Design when they leave school.

Note: Students may take up to three of the NCEA Level 2 Visual Art courses offered: Design, Painting, Photography, Printmaking and Sculpture - however those students wishing to take more than two of these subjects may only do so with the approval of the HOD and their Divisional Principal.
