12MUO

NCEA Level 2 Music

Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mr C. Petch

The 12MUO course consists of a combination of NCEA Level 2 internally and externally assessed standards that focus on the musical disciplines of: Solo Performance, Composition, Aural, Score Reading/Theory and the study of two Music Works. The course forms a natural progression from 11MUO and 11MUC. All listed internal standards and the Aural external assessment are compulsory. All students will sit a second external, choosing either Music Works or Score Reading. Some students, by arrangement with the class teacher, may enter all three externals and/or Group Performance. Students selecting this course are required to take weekly lessons on their instrument in addition to the classroom lessons. These lessons may be accessed through the school's Itinerant Music Teachers' scheme (free of charge) or with a private tutor outside of school (paid lessons). Please ask any of the Music Department staff for advice and help if you are unsure about your suitability for this course.

The content of the 12MUO course is as follows:

Perform Two Substantial Pieces of Music as a Featured Soloist

Two solo performances are examined during the year. Both performances require two contrasting pieces or one extended piece with contrasting sections at the highest technical standard the student is capable of, on their chosen instrument.

Compose Two Substantial Pieces of Music

This will be assessed in terms two and three.

Demonstrate aural skill through written representation

This aspect will be taught in the context of classroom learning throughout the year, but is assessed in an external exam at the end of the year.

Demonstrate knowledge of conventions in a range of music scores (optional)

This aspect will be taught in the context of classroom learning throughout the year, but is assessed in an external exam at the end of the year.

Demonstrate understanding of two substantial contrasting music works

This aspect will be taught in the context of classroom learning throughout the year, but is assessed in an external exam at the end of the year.
