NCEA Level 1 Music

11MUO
Course Description

Teacher in Charge: Mr C. Petch

The 11MUO course consists of a combination of NCEA Level 1 internally and externally assessed standards that focus on the musical disciplines of: Solo Performance, Group Performance, Composition, Aural and Score Reading/Theory. Students selecting this course are required to take weekly lessons on their instrument in addition to the classroom lessons. These lessons may be accessed through the school's Itinerant Music Teachers' scheme (free of charge) or with a private tutor outside of school (paid lessons). Please ask any of the Music Department staff for advice and help if you are unsure about your suitability for this course.

The content of the 11MUO course is as follows:

Perform Contrasting Music as a Featured Soloist

Two solo performances are examined during the year. Both performances require two contrasting pieces at the highest technical standard the student is capable of, on their chosen instrument.

Perform as a Member of a Group (optional)

The performance can comprise two or more contrasting pieces of music or one extended piece. Most students will complete this standard using a small group such as chamber music or a rock group.

Compose Music to Meet Specific Requirements

This is assessed on the basis of two composition tasks. Formative assessment of tasks during the year will be used to determine student style and authenticity.

Demonstrate Aural and Theoretical Skills through Transcription.

This aspect will be taught in the context of classroom learning throughout the year, but is assessed in an external exam at the end of the year.

Demonstrate Knowledge of Conventions used in Music Scores

This aspect will be taught in the context of classroom learning throughout the year, but is assessed in an external exam at the end of the year.
