Course Description

Recommended Prior Learning

There are no prerequisites for students to take Level 3 Sports Leadership & Performance.

This course will suit students who are confident in communicating and leading acitivites and events and students who enjoy participating in and coaching various sports.


  • Provide students with the opportunity to gain qualifications relevant to the Sport, Fitness, and Recreation Industry. Students can gain Unit Standards that can be credited towards Tertiary Qualifications.
  • Allow students the opportunity to develop their understanding and proficiency in leadership skills and qualities. These skills will be learned through their application to Sports Coaching and Challenge Ropes Course context.
  • Develop knowledge about specific leadership roles in sport such as coaching, and apply these skills in a practical setting.
  • Encourage students to develop positive attitudes towards healthy lifestyles, and achieve goals which they set for themselves. 

Lead By Doing: Team building activities and an off-site adventure based learning and high ropes exeperience.
Growing Coaches: Coach workshops and practical specialist sport sessions. Practical coaching sessions on-site and at primary and intermediate schools.

If you are passionate about sports coaching and human performance our course will provide you with opportunities to develop an understanding of the role of sport in society. It will focus on participating and contributing from an individual perspective as well as encompassing a community view. It will provide you with opportunities to enhance your ability to relate to others, build your teamwork and develop your leadership and coaching skills.

You won't be stuck in a classroom, you’ll learn from industry-experienced tutors, get plenty of practicals around the school and learn in real-world environments through adventure based learning experiences and off-site coaching opportunities.

Assessment Information

Although this course offers mostly practical experiences, there is theory work to complete to meet assessment requirements. Theory is applied to all practical situations, sports and activities.

This is a Unit Standards course, which is designed to offer students a wide range of skills in Sports Leadership and at the same time gain accreditation for their achievements within the National Qualifications Framework. This course contributes towards NCEA Level 3 (17 credits), with all 17 credits internally assessed. Unit Standards operate on an achieved/not achieved basis for each performance criteria in each element. You need to pass every performance criteria in every element for each of the unit standards.

Te Mahi Ako and Toi Mai are the Government agencies responsible for all organisations running vocational training in the Sport, Fitness and Outdoor Recreation area. All standards, policy and procedure and assessments have been approved by this controlling body.
